The .040" Cometic gaskets will raise compression ratio, not lower it. That said, the GM MLS gaskets seal up the best and are a decent price. I got mine from Texas Speed. Get the LS1 gaskets that are 3.910" bore diameters. That's what I used and I have no problems. The LS2 gaskets will lower compression because they are 4.030" bore diameters.
  • Using thinner than stock gaskets, and/or omitting the base gasket, to increase compression or improve squish clearance, is a very common practice in high performance motors. Since this raises or lowers the rocker arm relative to the cam, it needs to be factored into the pushrod length.
  • Head gasket thickness depends on your quench for best results. You want to be right around .040". My pistons are .024 in the hole at TDC so I used the Fel-Pro#1094 .015" head gasket to get right to .039" quench.
  • I built my boosted LQ4 into a 408 using a forged rotating assembly at 9:1 compression ratio. So far my best performance was using 93 octane at 17 to 18 psi boost, 17° timing, and an air-to-air intercooler. My intake air temperatures were rising 50° to 60° in the 1/8th mile, and I eventually popped a Cometic head gasket.

If the later MLS gaskets are installed with the heads that have the recess, the engine will leak coolant to the outside from the recessed area in the deck surface. ’99-’04 LS1 – The LS1 switched to center-bolt rocker covers in ’99, so these engines came with a new head.

Compressed thickness of the head gasket-- Usually 0.040", but varies with gasket manufacturer and application; Piston top volume-- If the piston is dished, domed, or dimpled, that has an affect on compression ratio. Combustion chamber volume-- How much open space is in the head above the cylinder

The OEM engines utilize a.051-inch thick head gasket to compensate for this,” explains DiBlasi. “Aftermarket piston companies have made both pistons that are out of the deck, below deck, and even with the deck. Customer requirements and application typically dictate which route we will choose.

Mar 20, 2012 · LS2 would be aluminum, LQ4 and LQ9's are cast iron so that's just a quick visual. The cast iron 6.0's have "6.0" cast into the block in 2 locations that I've found out, (around the water pump and behind the bellhousing) Since you had the heads off you should know right away whether it's an LQ4 or LQ9.

Available in 3.997", 4.056", 4.150", and 4.174" bore sizes. These gaskets use a steel O-ring that cuts into the head to provide the strongest seal available for boost applications or high compression motors. They do feature the extra tabs for 6-bolt capabilities.

Cylinder Head Gaskets Early LS engines featured composite-type cylinder head gaskets. Around 2002, GM switched to MLS (multi-layer steel) cylinder head gaskets. All remaining gaskets throughout the engines are formed elastic seal-type gaskets that are reusable (depending on condition, of course). The use of MLS cylinder head gaskets is recommended.

    3) I recommend 11:1 compression on 91 or 93 octane, so order .040 Cometic head gaskets (thinner than the factory MLS .054 thickness). This will give excellent quench and approx 11:1 compression which is no problem on pump gas. 4) Camshaft should be a 23x/24x grind with just over .600 lift.

Jan 11, 2016 · Gaskets are the seals placed between engine components before they are assembled in order to provide a reliable seal. They can be made of paper, rubber, metal, and sometimes a combination of the three. The intake manifold gaskets are responsible for sealing the intake manifold against the cylinder head(s).
